ALVES EXPLAINS SURGERY AND DESIRE TO FIGHT FITCH
Wednesday, April 7th, 2010
There may not be a scarier moment in a fighter's life than when they are told something could be "career ending." That's the nightmare that Thiago "Pitbull" Alves faced just before his fight at UFC 111 when an MRI and CAT scan revealed a brain anomaly that concerned doctors enough that they would not clear him to fight.
At that point, Alves started to deal with the harsh realities of not only his fight career being in jeopardy, but simply said when the word "brain" is uttered by any doctor followed by "problem," the worst thoughts start trolling around in your head.
"When my manager called me on Wednesday he told me I was not going to ...
FLORIAN AND MAYNARD ON COLLISION COURSE
Friday, April 2nd, 2010
Even in victory it's the great fighters in MMA who are always humble and never believe they've reached the pinnacle. That was the attitude of Georges St-Pierre after defeating Dan Hardy at UFC 111, and Kenny Florian displayed much the same attitude coming off of a dominant win over former Pride champion Takanori Gomi at UFC Fight Night 21 on Wednesday.
The fight was always in Florian's control, from the stand-up to the ground game, but the Massachusetts fighter remained grounded, realizing that he still hasn't reached the finish line.
"I know I still have a lot to work on, we're slowly changing things around, re-positioning some pieces, and slowly changing my style to be able to ...
Shane Carwin vs. Brock Lesnar Could Be Biggest UFC Event Ever
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010
Shane Carwin is bright enough to handle the demands of a full-time job as a civil and mechanical engineer in northern Colorado. Maybe then, he'd be so kind as to explain the science behind the mind-scrambling statistics he's compiled. Twelve fights, 12 first-round stoppage victories.
"I'm wordless. I'm speechless," was all he could muster after smashing his way through his latest victim, the one-time undisputed and one-time interim UFC champion Frank Mir at UFC 111.
The challenges though, continue to get bigger, and the next problem the engineer must solve is the biggest in MMA right now: UFC heavyweight champion Brock ...
Brain Irregularity Sidelines Thiago Alves
Thursday, March 25th, 2010
UFC's Thiago "Pitbull" Alves will not fight at Saturday's UFC 111, because a CAT Scan shows an irregularity in his brain ... TMZ has learned.
Thiago was scheduled to rumble with Jon Fitch on Saturday -- but a pre-fight CAT Scan revealed an irregularity -- a source close to 26-year-old Pitbull tells TMZ the irregularity involves an artery in the brain.
UFC honcho Dana White tells TMZ he will fly Pitbull to a specialist for further evaluation. White says, "If it's true, it can be career-ending."
No one will replace Pitbull on Saturday. The headliner is Georges St- Pierre -- ironically, the fighter who solidly beat Thiago in his last fight last July.
