Brandon Vera suffers three facial fractures, return date unknown

Brandon Vera received more than a bruised ego on Sunday at the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo.; a fearsome elbow strike from opponent Jon Jones left the UFC light heavyweight with facial fractures and an unknown return date. In the night's Versus-televised main event, Jones landed the blow as he postured up in Vera's guard midway through the first round. Vera rolled to his side in visible pain when the shot slammed into the right side of his face near his eye socket. The strike caused three fractures in Vera's right cheekbone, the fighter's manager, Matt Stansell, today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Before the illegal downward elbow strikes that brought about his disqualification, Jon Jones first put Matt Hamill in real trouble with this leg trip takedown that turned the tide of the fight and, according to Hamill's trainer, broke his left shoulder.  Hamill still fought on after that point and did a surprisingly good job, considering the injury, of defending against the onslaught from Jones that soon followed.  That's why you can't really argue that it was the takedown and not the elbows that ended the fight.  What you could argue, however, is that Hamill got a lucky break when the illegal blows gave the ref a chance to take a look at him ...

UFC president Dana White was noticeably absent from The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale post-event press conference, and it may have been for the best. The Nevada State Athletic Commission utilized instant replay to determine the outcome of a mixed martial arts contest for the first time in its history on the TUF 10 Finale card, and White's favorite whipping-boy official, Steve Mazzagatti, was responsible for utilizing the technology. But NSAC executive director Keith Kizer was at the gathering, and he believes Mazzagatti handled the situation precisely as instructed by the commission's regulations.
