Teammate vs. Teammate Bouts Remain Unattractive to AKA’s fighters
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
The UFC's welterweight division has had its ups and downs over the course of the last few years. At one point, many fans, including myself, had a very pessimistic outlook on the division's future as current champion Georges St. Pierre had taken out Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, and B.J. Penn in title defenses. He'll fight in his fourth straight defense on March 27th against Dan Hardy in a battle that many fans see as another destructive win for the champion.
Unfortunately for fans, there aren't too many options left for Georges St. Pierre. Jon Fitch will likely be the next title contender if he can defeat Thiago Alves at UFC 111, but a case could be made for Josh Koscheck if ...
Was it Worth the Weight?: The ‘Nightmare’ Effect of Weight-Cutting on a Fighter’s Career
Monday, January 4th, 2010
The issue of weight-cutting as a ‘quick fix' to a fighter's divisional troubles came to me as an interesting subject for discussion following B.J. Penn's destruction of Diego Sanchez at UFC 107. Not to take anything away from Penn's phenomenal performance, but it's hard for me to sit back and honestly say that Diego Sanchez's transition to 155 has been a wise move for his career. Sanchez's drop was inspired by two back-to-back defeats and the allure of physical advantages (strength and conditioning) he would supposedly hold over his fellow competitors at lightweight. But where have those advantages been displayed? Certainly not in his last three fights, which I will get to, but first, let's take a stroll down memory ...
UFC NEWS (updated daily): Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell named “The Ultimate Fighter 11″ coaches
Sunday, December 6th, 2009
His pleas for the job apparently worked; Tito Ortiz will serve as a coach on the upcoming 11th season of "The Ultimate Fighter."
UFC officials confirmed the assignment during Saturday's The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort.
The other part of the surprise? Ortiz will coach against Chuck Liddell, not Forrest Griffin, on the upcoming season of the reality series, and the coaches will meet in a season-ending fight.
After dropping a close split decision to Griffin last month in the UFC 106 main event, Ortiz campaigned for the two to be coaches on "TUF 11." UFC officials, though, chose Liddell instead.
"TUF 11" begins taping in January and debuts on Spike TV in ...
Quote of the Day: Joe Rogan is Outraged by Judging Incompetence
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
I had a conversation with Doug Crosby, and he said that during one of the [UFC] fights, one of these boxing people that have come over and started judging MMA...someone was attempting a submission, and this person turned to him and said, 'what is he doing?' How CRAZY is that? This is a professional mixed martial arts judge at the highest level of the sport, someone who is judging an Ultimate Fighting Championship bout, between two guys that are professional fighters....their careers are on the line, it's a huge contest, two equally skilled guys in a hotly contested match, and the judge has literally no idea what's going on.Joe ...
