Shane Carwin is “in talks” for interim title fight against Cain Velasquez

November 18th, 2009
UFC heavyweight, Shane Carwin has revealed that he is in talks with the UFC over putting together an interim heavyweight title fight between him and Cain Velasquez early next year due to Brock Lesnar’s prolonged absence through injury.

Speaking via the Underground forum, Carwin said when asked about the possibility:

“We are in talks. I have a knee I am rehabbing and a baby due on the eleventh of February. I am down to do whatever is best for the division. Not sure how important the belt is in that scenario. (There are) lots of great fighters at the top and lots of talented young guns on the way up right now.”

Carwin and Velasquez were originally set to meet this weekend at UFC 106 but the fight was scrapped due to the promotion looking to keep it’s champion busy. Since Lesnar will be sidelined for at least the foreseeable future, this move seems the most logical step to make.
